Sherlock Holmes themed pub in London

The "Sherlock Holmes" in London is a legendary pub and restaurant that stands out not only for its culinary offerings, but also for its unique connection to the world of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. It is centrally located in the city and is a popular meeting place for fans of the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, tourists, and locals alike. The building itself has a long history: originally a small hotel called the Northumberland Hotel, later known as the Northumberland Arms, it was eventually converted into a Sherlock Holmes-themed pub by Whitbread & Co. in 1957. Today, it is operated by Greene King, a well-known British brewery and pub company, and maintains its Victorian charm with an impressive collection of memorabilia.

Best British pub cuisine London

The heart of the restaurant is the faithful reproduction of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson's living and working room from the fictional address 221B Baker Street. This exhibition, which is visible on the upper floor behind a glass wall, originally comes from the Festival of Britain 1951 and was assembled with the support of the Conan Doyle family and the Sherlock Holmes Society of London. Highlights include Dr. Watson's old service revolver, a Persian slipper for Holmes' tobacco, and even the stuffed head of the Hound of the Baskervilles. This collection makes the venue a pilgrimage site for enthusiasts and gives it an atmosphere that seems to come directly from the pages of the famous detective stories.

Historic restaurant in London

Culinarily, the "Sherlock Holmes" offers classic British pub cuisine with a focus on hearty, traditional dishes. A real highlight is the "Fish & Chips", served with crispy batter, succulent cod, and thick-cut fries - often accompanied by a creamy remoulade and mashed peas that perfectly complement the taste. Equally popular is the "Steak & Ale Pie", a hearty pie classic with tender beef in a rich, malty sauce, enveloped in a golden brown crust. For meat lovers, the "Pork Belly" stands out, slow-cooked and with a crispy crackling, served with seasonal sides. Vegetarian options such as a spicy vegetable curry or a fresh salad with goat cheese are also available, showing that the restaurant values diversity.

The drink selection is equally impressive and reflects the pub tradition. The house "Watson's Golden Ale" is a guest favorite - a light, malty beer that pairs perfectly with the hearty dishes. In addition to a wide range of real ales, there is also a selection of wines, spirits, and non-alcoholic beverages to round out the offering. Especially in the summer months, the covered rooftop garden opens, offering a relaxed atmosphere and ideal for a cool drink on warm days.

Pub with Victorian charm London

The ambiance is a mix of Victorian flair and cozy warmth. The lively bar dominates the ground floor with wooden floors and an open, inviting layout, while the restaurant area on the first floor creates a more intimate atmosphere. The walls are adorned with old photos, movie posters, and caricatures of actors who have embodied Holmes and Watson over the decades, emphasizing the historical depth of the place. The furnishings with dark wooden furniture, brass accents, and soft lighting enhance the feeling of being transported to another time. Particularly the view of the exhibition through small windows in the hallway or from the rooftop garden provides a special experience.

The service is often described as friendly and efficient, with the staff striving to convey a sense of hospitality to the guests. The venue is dog-friendly and also offers families a welcoming environment, making it versatile. There is no reservation requirement, which can lead to waiting times on busy days, but most visitors find that the patience is worth it. Regular events such as quiz nights or seasonal specials provide additional entertainment and make each visit varied.

Um espaço muito apelativo e temático com uma grande variedade de cerveja. Bebi a cerveja “da casa” e estava excelente. Recomendo.

Lovely little pub. The kiwi lady that works upstairs is absolutely lovely! The food is very english, so don't expect a lot of flavour. But the atmosphere and beer are excellent! Would definitely go back for a few pints.

Great bar/pub and restaurant. The pub has a very good atmosphere, fortunately no screens so conversations can still be held. The staff is friendly and helpfull. They serve multiple sorts of delicious beers and other drinks of course. While we visited the pub on a friday late afternoon it was pretty crowded and people enjoyed their accompany. The restaurant above is completely decorated and equipped in the theme of Sherlock Holmes and provides a plethora of paraphernalia. It is a joy to spend some time in “investigating” all the objects exhibited. The rooms in the restaurant still have the original wooden wall panelling and wall paper. Very pretty! Also here the staff is friendly and helpfull. The dinner we got served was excellent and against a fair price. I highly recommend this venue in order to drink, eat and enjoy the good atmosphere from old times.

Very rude and derogatory bartender who I felt was disrespectful. As a Sherlock fan I was disappointed. Also, they were out of the Sherlock and Watson Ales, which is not necessarily the fault of the bartenders. Should have communicated this. Note that they are closing for a refurb. However, it is quite unprofessional of management to run out of the two beers that make the pub famous.

We're on vacation and were drawn in by the name and loved the food. The fish and chips is fantastic and my wife loved her sirloin steak sandwich. The service is also fantastic. You might want to make reservations. We didn't know but we still got a table.

Sherlock Holmes is a great pub with a fantastic atmosphere and superb service. The staff are friendly and attentive, making the experience even better. The only downside was the fish and chips, which were a bit bland. It also got quite crowded on Friday afternoon, but that’s to be expected in a popular spot. Overall, a solid place for a classic pub experience!

Kids food menu on line is redundant as they do not do a childrens menu. Only found out when attending the pub after booking. Food came out at different times a group of six adults two children so not that big of a headache!
